The proof was in the pudding at RAFW and patent leather is here to stay. Patent leather shoes particularly dominated most of the runway shows, not to forget belts, cuffs and bags of the same variety making scattered appearances throughout the week. Designers such as Jayson Brunsdon and Fleur Wood joined the bandwagon, while designer Daniel Avakian used the trend as the staple that brought his monochromatic Spring/Summer range together. Who feels like getting slightly more serious about the issues and ethics in fashion? Me.

I believe, and it has been said before, that my role as a journalist is not to tell you what to think but give you things to think about. Here I go…

The sudden reappearance of fur on the runway is sparking the morality debate once again. I will be the first to admit I love the glamour of a fur coat but I will also be the first to admit I don’t love the killing of animals in the name of fabulosity (that sounds like a mascara, I certainly didn’t make that one up).

My question to you – is fur in fashion necessary?

The argument sustained by the fur producers and wearers goes something like this:

Their motivation is the high profit margin involved in the sale of fur, they defend that animals which can prove themselves profitable actually stand a greater chance of being protected and preserved. Also, ... Fatal Fashion at 2threads

Admittedly, I hadn’t done my research as I dashed from Central to Circular Quay in hope of sneaking in to Jacqui Alexander’s Srping/Summer 2008 show.

To the untrained eye, one could have mistaken Rosemount Australian Fashion Week for a funeral or perhaps a better analogy, a week long wake. The sea of men and women dressed head to toe in black (very expensive black I might add), was very deceiving. In saying that, everyone looked fashion forward and amazingly debonair.

Electro house beats, a dramatic wall of purple light and a tightly packed room of stunners sets quite the atmosphere. After all, I had been looking forward to the young and practical range designed by 19 year old Jacqui Krivitsky (for all business purposes she would like to be known as Jacqui Alexander). She is the youngest designer to be stocked in high-end British department store, Harvey Nichols.

To be honest, I hadn’t thought of wedding dresses since I was fifteen and an avid fashion drawer with three sisters as make believe clients. Being Eastern European, in those nine odd years since my drawing days I must have attended close to 30 weddings and the dress on each bride washed by like foam in the sea. There were the skinny girls who wore simple bias cut silk sheaths and then there were the girls with overbearing ethnic mothers-in-law who ended up wrapped in half a ton of tulle and diamantes.

Upon getting engaged I bought two bridal magazines. One was the thickness of a Beijing phonebook and full of shit I couldn’t afford, it contained more ads than content and of course, the obligatory Macedonian wedding of the year (I am sure there is a medal handed out for biggest Macedonian wedding). I thought I had done pretty well buying a leviathan magazine for twelve dollars but soon enough I had loaned that magazine to a flat mate to practice drawing comics... The third Midnight Fashion event was as much of a success as the last two. A smaller event than the previous ones, held at trendy Melbourne nightclub Eve, it was an intimate yet not overly crowded evening.

The fashion parade kicked off at 10.30 with Nana Judy's menswear collection where tight jeans, cardigans, and hoodies dominated. Monochrome stripes, spirals and checks were key to this collection.

Next was designer Indiana with womenswear. There was an eclectic mix of boho, sixties, and sailor. Blue, black and white were popular, as well as frills, crochet and high necks.

Another Label, Another Boy followed with menswear. Similarly, monochrome dominated this collection, with splashes of colour to brighten things up. Funky tshirts, cropped trousers, and white plimsols were introduced, creating a very cool, fresh look.

Leeloo reminds me of one of those quirky little boutiques you might find down Brunswick way. The store itself is an online treasure trove of talented local designers with Leeloo providing them a platform to get their wares noticed. Leeloo stocks jewellery, clothing, art, home wares amongst other precious little finds. The thing I love most about Leeloo is often, designers will only produce one or two of a particular piece, meaning that you will end up with something special, and no one will ever show up to a party wearing the same pair of earrings! ... Clemens en August is not your average fashion label. Shunning the traditional store environment, the label has no stockists, no fashion shows and no glossy magazine advertisements. Each collection continues to cause a stir within fashion circles and garners an impressive celebrity following to boot. As an offshoot from the giant C&A retail empire, Alexander Brenninkmeijer’s collection is full of structured pieces and sharp tailoring that refine old classics and faithful wardrobe staples. Each piece is made in limited numbers so the chances of bumping into someone wearing the same garment as you are unlikely. Instead of relying on the more traditional ways of selling the collection, C&A prefer to use what they call “selling tours”, taking their pieces to invite-only locations (usually art galleries or theatres) around the US and Europe. Fashion Fights Fair, held on Friday night at the BMW Centre at Fed Square was a show with a message.

Not only were beautiful, ethically created clothes displayed on the runway, but each piece had a story.

Perhaps that silk dress was reconstructed from a recycled 1950’s gown. The cute tee I was lemming may have been made from organic fair trade cotton, and screen printed by hand using chemical free inks.

Claire Bowditch (known for her soulful tunes and love of all things ethical) MC’d on the night, introducing independent designers and store-owners who attended the exhibition to get the word out that we can all do our bit for the environment, even if we are fashionistas with an extremely bad shopping habit!

After we ooed and ahhed over the gorgeous pieces floating down the catwalk, we were able to check out some of the ethical stores set up in and around the BMW Centre.

Imagine a world where all your shopping needs are conveniently at reach! Fashion Weekend opened last night at the Royal Hall of Industries in Sydney and is set to continue until Sunday. Hosted by Shop Til You Drop mag, Fashion Weekend has everything an eager little fashionista could ever want.
The opening night included free make overs by ModelCo, and hair inspiration from Toni & Guy. Not to mention a wonderful catwalk show, a free goodie bag and an expansive and rather overwhelming collection of designer clothing/shoes/accessories at incredibly good discounts.
The Royal Hall of Industries was absolutely jam packed with girls & boys searching for the perfect find. Designers show casing their best included Sass&Bide, Fleur Wood and Marnie Skillings, and we cannot forget the timeless favourites such as Jayson Brunsdon, Nicola Finetti and Alex Perry. Matchy vs Clashy

It has become apparent to me, as someone who changes their fashion as much as their well you know… that the ‘matchy’ vs ‘clashy’ discussion has come to a head.

For the past month I have been conservatively ‘matchy’ sticking to black, navy and greys. Some mornings my creative side does feel a little gloomy but the clothes I have been wearing make me feel polished and somewhat expensive. I feel safe and comfortable and enjoy the mystery of a woman dressed head to toe in black.

For the past few years, digging through buckets at vinnies searching for vintage treasures was my weekend hobby but now, I find myself pulling out every black item I own. The greatest part, it doesn’t have to be new or vintage, just black. Now I just buy useless objects I don't need from op shops.

Fremantle label, Morrison, was established in 2002 by Kylie Radford and Richard Poulson who named their brainchild after their beloved dog, a Kelpie Labrador cross who has sadly passed away since. Regulars at the Fremantle boutique might remember the black pooch that was a permanent feature at the store. This is proof of the unself-conscious attitude of the couple towards fashion. W.A fashion can be rather haughty with all that mineral money to cater to, not to mention, East Coast envy. Morrison miraculously remains level headed, not just in prices and sizes, but at the very core of their design aesthetic. Consisting of very wearable women’s wear in predominantly neutral tones, season after season the pieces resonate with a timeless beauty instead of slavishly snapping after the heels of the fashion dictators.

Our fashion writer Varia takes a discerning peek at RAFW from a Melbournite's perspective: There is a reason why Melbourne hosted the Olympics in 1956, 44 years before arch-nemesis Sydney. Could you imagine anything but grainy black and white representing Melbourne? Our boulevards, trams and city should permanently be viewed in black and white, particularly on an overcast day whilst sipping coffee, staring at the grey sea, reading Baudelaire in black and white. Melbournians have an innate aversion to explosive colour not to mention the neon-glare of the future; it clashes with our environment and adds to the pain of 3pm sugar-low headaches. We leave the colour wheel to the candy ravers and Hi-5. Melbourne boasts a thriving population of Goths, Sicilian grandmothers, Greek widows and disaffected art students. Black is black. Is black. We are masters of the monochrome.

Could this be the one trend to finally knock skinny jeans off their perch, high up in the fashionista tree? Hmmm, perhaps... With the amount of exposure this shape got during RAFW, I'd be surprised if the majority of people reading this blog were not wearing a pair right now! Man-style pants (for the ladies) are most definitely here to stay... well, at least for the next two seasons... Silence is Golden channeled the glamour-zons of the 80s in their collection last week, proving that the sexed-up suit can be super feminine. See below. Office workers, teenage girls and fashionistsas who thought they’d give Jeanswest a go, converged on Melbourne Central Wednesday night for Jeanswest/Cosmo Body Love.

Jeanswest has certainly improved in the fashion stakes, from being the lesser cousin to other jeans shops and possibly being considered a bit ‘daggy’ they’re fashion options have hit an all-time high, complete with the must haves for Winter like pussy bow blouses, knit cardigans and cute berets in a variety of colors!

Special Cosmo VIP’s were checked off as they escaped the harsh Melbourne weather and they entered a girl’s paradise; makeovers, fashion stylists, photographers and of course, massive discounts! The first half hour was a mad rush as girls rushed around trying to find their size before it sold out and take advantage of the 20% discount, but they were to find more reason to shop after the fashion parade.
