He's a bit of a William
living from his pockets
fops and dandies slide around him
slithering, flopping and prancing for his intentions to be directed to their attention
he has patent to them, issued by them
but is, unfortunately, distracted deeply, normally,
by how well rooms are lit
water beneath the bridge
a girl in a scarf
he's a well-cut card

he dreams of clean-shaven ways
presentable jackets and clothes and bright eyes
but he does not at all mind if these things never come
it is non-distressing for him, underdressing, i mean
he is watched by jesters and they call to him
telling him what to say and what not to
snakes do show him where to go,
various friendly Gods deliver him from evil,
or at least attempt to, for they are tempted, too
and God is only human,
a well-cut card.

is drawn with exquisite detail upon his bag
the thing he lays claim to is all that he keeps the rain from
he writes his own rules as they are the most painful to break
but most reasonable, with both the most and the least concequences
the girls and the boys he knows all love him except for those who wish that all loved them
the girls he loves do love him but so far only as close as friends
he doesn't try very hard
he gets a mile from a yard without scale being marred
he is, as they say, a well-cut card.
