The opulent surrounds of Brunswick street bar Polly was a justified match for the new Joolz collection launch party. Head designer Airdrie Makim was present in all her splendor as was current muse Sally Arnott and a few familiar 2threads modelesque faces, dressed head to toe in black, bar some glittering Joolz accessories. Two new designers have joined the fray this time around with the avant-garde New Zealander Neroli and guest designer Steve, creating strong items for Joolz Man, rounding out the team.
The range, as ever, has a strong Australian undercurrent, the designs often inspired by and make good use of natural local metallics, stones and woods. Often recycled, the materials represent Airdrie's earthy, natural aesthetic. A chunk y, wooden bead necklace was a standout piece using simple but bold baubles in a mass around the neck.
On the other hand, the new "princess" bead bracelets were exotic and ultra-girly - looking their best when stacked in multiples up the arms like sparkling armour. The beads used created delicate yet attention-grabbing pieces suitable for an Indian queen or Arabian princess.
For the child at heart there is a range of "farmyard" pieces. Using those, now vintage, children’s' plastic toys of various barn yard animals strung together each piece takes you on a nostalgic, quirky little trip.
Each item is unique due to the materials used and many are extremely limited edition so it's little wonder the independent label came runner-up only to Oroton at the Essential Awards for Accessories Brand of the Year.
