Who feels like getting slightly more serious about the issues and ethics in fashion? Me.

I believe, and it has been said before, that my role as a journalist is not to tell you what to think but give you things to think about. Here I go…

The sudden reappearance of fur on the runway is sparking the morality debate once again. I will be the first to admit I love the glamour of a fur coat but I will also be the first to admit I don’t love the killing of animals in the name of fabulosity (that sounds like a mascara, I certainly didn’t make that one up).

My question to you – is fur in fashion necessary?

The argument sustained by the fur producers and wearers goes something like this:

Their motivation is the high profit margin involved in the sale of fur, they defend that animals which can prove themselves profitable actually stand a greater chance of being protected and preserved. Also, that human history involves the use of fur as clothing and lastly, the mistreatment of fur-bearing animals is highly exaggerated and often fabricated.

I don’t know about you but the killing and skinning of innocent animals does not sound like an exaggeration or fabrication to me – you kill them, strip their skin and then wear it. Ok I’m siding aren’t I. Oops.

I am pretty sure cave men wore animal skins and fur because they didn’t have the means to make other clothes. Fabric and sewing machines didn’t exist and by that I mean sweatshops. Oops again.

Faux fur has to be the only solution. We may always hear the horror stories about them being made of dog hair or something outlandish like that and it probably won’t feel as nice and certainly won’t last as long but it will be a lot cheaper and you won’t get hassled for wearing it.

The world is embracing things like sustainable living with hybrid cars and carbon offsetting as part of a carbon neutral lifestyle, why not apply "playing your part" to fashion as well?

I am not here to preach, nor am I here to make people feel guilty but a simple bump in the direction of designers such as Stella Macartney, Ralph Lauren and Marc Bouwer can’t hurt right?

The lovely Gemma has alerted me to 'The Trollsen Twins', a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals petition against the Olsen twins and I quote - "Don't think it's ok for 50 rabbits to die for one fur coat? Tell Hairy-Kate and Trashley to cut it out now."

PETA is furious the girls have “ignored pleas to stop wearing fur and using it in their fashion collection.” They have unveiled a campaign against the “fur fiends” -  Mary- Kate (”Hairy Kate”) and Ashley (”Trashley”) - with a tag line: “Fur Is Worn by Beautiful Animals and Ugly People.”

Visit  www.peta2.com/Trollsens/ to send them an urgent message, watch the 'Full House of Horrors', dress The Trollsens or even buy their merchandise (free web banners hooray!)
