Topshop Creates The Velvet Dress: Is This Trend Back In Style?
It’s no secret that the eighties are back in Vogue. Leather jackets, costume jewellery, big hair and bigger shoulder pads have all been making their mark on the fashion world for some time now. You can’t walk through the trendy parts of any major city without having to get out your IPhone at some point to double check that, yes, it definitely is 2009. And then you remember: They didn’t even have IPhones in the eighties. Phew. The worst of the eighties, however, has, until now, remained in hibernation. Remember velvet? That gothic, crushed, horrible and unflattering fabric? Well, thanks to Topshop, the velvet dress has made a comeback. But boy, has it changed.

The velvet dress of today is sleek, sexy and stylish. Wear it short and well fitted with heels killer enough to crush those IPhones with one swift step. As has always been the case, the fabric looks best in strong, jewel colours. For inspiration, look to Topshop (of course), Marc Jacobs, Ferre and Balenciaga. If, after ogling at the former collections, you’re still not entirely convinced on the velvet dress, why not try something a little more subtle. Brands such as Black Milk offer punky velvet leggings for no more than $80.
Don’t forget to dress up your velvet with leather jackets, costume jewellery, big hair and bigger shoulder pads. And try not to look too eighties. Hah! Just kidding. That's impossible. And anyway, the eighties are the bomb.
