Tilly and the Wall "O" - Album Review
The endearing Tilly and the Wall’s third full length album produced by the acclaimed Bright Eyes’ Mike Mogis on Team Love Records is set to continue producing the fuzzy feelings that the band has become famous for.The self titled album received the unofficial title “O” by its fans due to its album cover design featuring an oval shaped frame for artwork that will be seen inside of it. Fans who purchase the album will receive different and unique limited edition prints produced by a variety of artists.
The band from Omaha, Nebraska formed in 2004 with a tap dancer in place of a traditional drummer. They are admired for their bright co-ed harmonies, rousing choruses, and their overall open-hearted good nature. Last year, they blew audiences away when they toured Australia for Splendour in the Grass.
Tilly and the Wall still realise it feels good to stomp your feet and scream at the top of your lungs. Not at all afraid to experiment, they have recorded Jamie Pressnall's taps through a variety of different amplifiers and floors to give each song its own distinct high energy rhythm. In this album, the group introduces percussion and punk rock riffs to diversify the rhythm section and compliment their tried and true tap sound. However, they maintain their commitment to an innately innocent sound that's free of pretense and full of spontaneity.
I was particularly impressed with “Cacophony”, a triumphant acoustic pop anthem rich with three-part harmonies, horns, and their essential poly-rhythmic tap dancing. "Pot Kettle Black", recorded in a local school’s gymnasium with a 10 person stomp group also impressed with its tough electric guitar melody.
O is due for release in Australia through Dew Process on August 30.
