The Songs That Mean Something

Music isn't all about relationships: love, sex and all that jazz. There are a few songs out there in musicdom that actually mean something (to me). I am a big fan of writing to sooth the soul and when I actually get my novel published I would love for someone to pick it up and feel better. I would love my words to help someone but while I wait to find a publisher (is there anyone out there?) I fill the void of not helping someone with words from others.

Whenever I'm sad I tend to listen to a select few songs. Don't be mistaken these songs are a lot different to those I dance to or those that I just put on the clean my house. These are songs that actually help more than those two blocks of chocolate (but despite what some people claim: the chocolate still helps).

1. 'Wonderful' - Everclear

Lyrics like: I close my eyes when I get too sad, I think thoughts that I know are bad really helped me through some really hard times and while the trauma might not be as terrible as it once was the lyrics of 'Wonderful' really lift my spirits. I don't know how Everclear wrote a song that sounds just like me (aside from the Star Wars poster). This song really means something and while some situations may be different the song is adaptable and holds you close when you are all alone and need it most.

2. 'Drops of Jupiter' - Train

What I am about to say may sound terribly corny and as someone who hates romance and cuddling and all that crap, trust me, I know: this is my boyfriend's and my song. Yes, we have a song and as much as I hate the fact that I bought into all that romantic crap having "a song" does help in moments of need. Whenever we have a fight (no matter how small) I generally turn this song on and it makes me smile. I realise that he loves me in these words and I'm sure if you and your partner have a song it will do the same. Lyrics like did you fall for a shooting star one without a permanent scar resounds loud and clear with me because, as most of us are, I am scarred and he loves me despite my flaws. To me, this song is truly a great love song and it's made even more great by the fact that not many people consider it to be. I love the heartache and love in this song. It truly melts my often icy heart.

3. 'Just Like a Pill' - Pink

While this song may seem kind of suicidal/depressing/whatever...I love it. When you're in a dark place it makes it seem alright. I'm not often depressed (I do have a Minnie after all) but when I feel sad I like to turn this song on really loud and just sit and listen. It makes me feel safe within myself and like 'Wonderful' it shows me that I'm not alone.

4. 'Lost' - The Calling

This song may not be widely known but it's from the same guys who brought you 'Wherever You Will Go' which I also love. It's always difficult for me to describe why I love this song so and looking at the lyrics it's hard to tell why it means something- it just does. Listening to the song, however, you sing a different tune. I guess the only way I can sum it up is with the first line from the song: well, I'm alone and I'm feeling lost.

Really, I think there are so few songs out there that really mean something. I may love to listen to music sung by Katy Perry about kissing a girl but it never really means anything. Music that touches your soul should always be acknowledged and these are songs that have touched mine.

i agree, although its kind of hard to consider a song with lyrics about soy lattes and deep fried chicken as a love song, but screw it, it works and i agree. :)
