Tafe Parade, Thurs 1 May, 2008

In an unprecendented move, the talented newcomers hand-picked for the TAFE Parade at RAFW are solely male, in a show called ‘Four Boys’. Dion Lee, Christopher Esber, Guy Hastie and Spencer Webber were chosen for their raw talent, dedication, ability and originality.

Dion Lee’s stunning collection was dominated by whites, greys, blacks, reds, and shades of coral. Minimalist, modern and innovative, he used draping, cut out details and interestingly, a wetsuit like material in his stand-out female collection. Trenches with oversized collars, pleated waisted mini skirts, elements of sheer, tight high waisted pants, zips, a mix of different textures (shiny, matt and leathers), hints of shockingly bright colours were the signature of this show.

Christopher Esber’s female line was a mix of sheer and shiny fabrics, panels of different textures and colours, gorgeous draping, cut out materials, detailed ruffles and gathers. Models hit the stage holding a green apple between their teeth â€" whether as a reference to Eve, loss of innocence, the gaining of knowledge or simply to make his collection memorable. Using white, grey metallics, and fuschia, Esber introduced standout details â€" such as oversized puzzle pieces cut out of material used as panels and layers in his pieces, giving his collection a surreal abstract feel. Once again sheer fabrics were also introduced, the standout Esber’s sheer almost harem style pants.

Guy Haste created an almost utilitarian/military collection for men and women in hues of white, black, green, metallic and a hint of red. A rather dark range featuring rather fitted clothes such as belted blazers, high collars, trenches with hoodies, dresses and vests. Details included zips, panelling, gathers, layering and cut out details. Most notable was a dress draped over with what almost looked like multi-pocketed backpacks draping over the front, back and over shoulders. Pseudo military, futuristic cargo gear with a hint of businesswear sophistication.

Spencer Webber’s collection for men and women incorporated a range of colours, patterns, details and styles. Using ruffles, gathers and draping to create shape and texture most notable were the black, red, green, grey, navy, and a lime colour which has been popular on the catwalk this week. Both women and men wore low-crotch pants, some baggy and gathered at the knee and ankle, others fitted to the leg. Standout was a full length, one shoulder gown that had a patchwork-esque look.
