Held in Melbourne Central's Piazza underneath the clock, the Fashion Incubator collective made their contribution to the recent State of Design festival with a couture show inspired by the Melbourne city skyline and its iconic landmarks and architecture. Thus the production was entitled ‘Skyline’ and included designers such as Ryan Whelan, Josua Andreas, Lenko, Zephyr Graham and Jenny Banister. The following examines highlights from the ten piece showcase.
The easiest inspiration to pick without prior knowledge was Jenny Bannister and her Federation Square inspired piece. The sculptural, multifaceted façade of Fed square was recreated spot-on by the designer using angles made from coat hangers. Assistance was required for the model to move around in and show off the structural piece of art.
A dress taking inspiration from our Arts Centre Spire was the next most recognisable piece in the show. It payed homage to the comparisons to the Parisian Eiffel tower with the inclusion of with burlesque-themed, Moulin Rouge style red satin and black lace. It was topped of by a tall, feathered, spire headpiece.
Ryan Whelan’s creation was formed without using one stitch. Instead the young designer was inspired by the destruction caused by a fire in Melbourne’s GPO and melted a gothic ballgown into shape. Imagine the fumes! Gathers and ruching kept the claret hued gown in form.
Zephyr Graham’s design was my personal favourite of the evening. Possibly the entire outfit, including a cartwheel style piece of millinery, is a worthy entrant the upcoming spring racing ‘fashions on the field’ competition especially now they have removed the ‘classic’ stipulation. I’d love to see how it would fair with the judges. Apparently made in just the last few days before the designer rushed off on an overseas jaunt, the piece features ingenious things done with black zips and a paper pleated skirt to create a very thoughtful mini-dress design.
The finale piece was up to the skill and talent of the Fashion Incubator interns. Their creation was collaborative ball gown in sky blue and white. Their task was to use Melbourne’s Centrals own conical glass spire as inspiration for their voluminous, gauzy piece.
