Unsigned 4 piece The Protectors are part of a new wave of bands that are signalling goodbye to the gloom and doom of the dead and tired ‘emo’ era, and claiming rock ‘n’ roll once again for what it is supposed to be: a little tongue in cheek, a little over the top and more than anything , fun. What a novel thought that is... who would have thought that guitar music was supposed to be fun?
Through the 6 songs on their My Space site (which regrettably, is all I can get my hands on at this point in time), The Protectors declare that upbeat good old rock music is back – guitar solos reign complete with clever guitar tricks, and falsettos and squeals are abundant in a variety of ways that crack at different degrees between Freddy Mercury and the Scissor Sisters (but thankfully and in good taste, they do not go as far as The Darkness).
‘All Systems Go’ is a big beat stadium rocker with guitars set to stun, complete with guitar solo in the middle eight and a ‘la da da da da... yeh!’ I am beginning to feel guilty having so much fun trying to hit the insanely high falsetto notes in the back ground as I punch the air to the drums while sitting at my computer.
‘Invisible’ is a musical flirtation that starts off with a pub rock version of a Gregorian chant underneath a Prince-esque melody that breaks into the most delightful squeal. Yes, even real men can squeal like that. ‘The Queen Future’ is equally as flirtatious and a track that could easily find its way onto the dance floor.
The Protectors push the envelope of how summertime you can get with the ‘wa wa hoo’ of ‘Look of Love,’ with slide guitar and a harmonica solo, a reminder that just about anyone anywhere in Sydney seems to be stuck in some denial that we live in an eternal summertime, no matter how cold, cloudy and windy it may get outside.
Honestly, it is my personal hope that there are more bands like The Protectors out there. Not that The Protectors alone can ‘save’ rock from gloom and doom, but they are a welcome part of those who picked up their guitars and joined the revolution.
I urge you to please check out www.myspace.com/theprotectors for all upcoming live shows.
