Lakedra “Raquel” Reed
Like the Mississippi Delta itself, Lakedra Reed entered the fashion world with rich, raw talent and materials that manifest themselves into the creations known as “Raquel”.
Lakedra’s learned background in fashion comes from the Fashion Merchandising curriculum at the University of Southern Mississippi. The program itself was not designed for artists and designers but rather for the marketing aspects of design. Knowing this, she undertook the apprenticeship of Hattiesburg seamstress Alisha Barnes for two years. Here, she learned the skill of sewing women’s wear which eventually saw the launch of her “Raquel” line in her debut fashion expose in December of 2004. Women’s wear never posed a real challenge for Lakedra as her estrogen heavy family of sisters, mothers, aunts, and nieces was usually the guinea pigs for her creative outlets.
After graduating, Lakedra relocated to Atlanta, GA where she has been living for 4 years. Here, she founded the company Couture Statis, LLC under which the Raquel by Lakedra Reed line now resides. Her designs have been showcased in numerous shows, publications, and movies in which she has garnered acclaim. Most notably, her eye for environment and show saw the production of a show in which her designs were headlined called “Victorian in the 21st Century”.
Atlanta has seen the blossoming of a designer whose lack of design background is currently compensated for in her passion for all things fashionable and the drive to seek perfection. She is direct inspired by Chanel and the Victorian period which harbors designs and fabrics that make women look and feel empowered and sexy. In the next 18 months, her sights are set upon absorbing any and all classic and innovative design techniques and expanding her current business internationally.
