Oromia - the unknown country

So I know 2threads is a style, fashion and shopping site with an emphasis on... well lets face it, events, clothes and socialising but I feel this is a topic I want to share with the world, so please bear with me!

On my recent shopping trip to Melbourne (where I gained a gorgeous cream Thurley silk dress - stunning I tell you!) I hailed myself a taxi with the most interesting of stories! His name was Zed and he was from a country in Africa called Oromia. Never heard of it? Nope, neither had I and not blowing my own trumpet, I see myself as a reasonably knowledgeable and well-travelled young lady when it comes to these things.

Here's what Zed had to tell me:

He was one of 20 children! Apparently that's not uncommon where he comes from. During the early 80s his father along with several other men from his region formed a liberation movement to help free Oromia (a region covering over 350,000 km2) from Ethiopia. Before being colonised by Europeans, Oromia was actually colonised by a black African nation which makes their situation really unique!

Zed's father was eventually arrested by the Ethiopian authorities and sentenced to death by hanging but managed to escape to Egypt and then was granted asylum in Melbourne, Australia. Sadly, after his father escaped, his mother was arrested and placed in prison for many years in Ethiopia and on release, died from complications from her incarceration.

Zed came to Australia when he was 19, put himself through high school (he'd completed up to 6th grade in Oromia), then through TAFE and now he's at university. He's been studying writing and has written a book detailing his mother and father's lives and the fate of his country. The book is to be called 'Total Corruption' and will be published by Good Shepherd in the near future. When he receives the proceeds from book sales, he hopes they will be enough for him to return to his home country and start up a business there. He also hopes the book will be used in schools in Ethiopia and Africa to educate others on something most of us know absolutely nothing about!

Imawesty - in my research after my chat with Zed, I discovered that problems Oromia is facing are not uncommon for East Africa and there are actually several regions in Somalia and Ethiopia going through similar battles for independence. The Europeans did not help either, when they colonised, they would put the minority tribes in power knowing it would better help their cause and the system has barely changed since they withdrew.
