So I wake up from being sick and I finally catch up with the second to last episode of Project Runway Season 5. It's the episode where the last designer is eliminated before being allowed to show their collection in the tents at Bryant Park.  One of the judges as you may or may not know is Micheal Kors. Now I generally like Micheal Kors as a designer, he has a great range and produces very wearable clothes. However I was stunned by what I heard him say as he was critiquing the contestant Kenley Collins wedding dress. He used Alexander McQueen as a put down. He said, "The dress is a little Alexander McQueenish." and "I wish the McQueen wasn't there." McQueen has been on of the most consistently innovative and risky designers in the past 10 years. I can only conclude that Kors, and I am starting to realize American designers and consumers, do not value innovation. The idea of fashion as art you are blessed enough to get to wear seems to elude us. We are a very bland bunch who wear what we are told and reject anything that might make us look unique and stand out. I have to tell you that I despise that and am going to work very hard to show that the only rule in fashion that matters is, is it you?

I havent seen this episode.. so maybe this comment isn't valid... Just wondering if Kors' comment was dissing of McQueen's designs or the fact the the contestant had designed something that looked like anothers work? I always noted in Aust Project Runway they would often comment that particular designs resembled other more extablished designers work... my sentiments are if we dismissed everything that "borrowed" from other creators, there would be nothing left to celebrate.
