I admit, I am one of very few girls who do not watch Sex and the City and yes that also means I have yet to see the movie [of the year?] and I am in no particular rush to do so. Although, I must also admit, the only very few episodes I have seen of the television hit series is because of the clothes they wear – sometimes outrageously gorgeous sometimes...not so. But even still the very few outfits have always stunned me. And ever since I have always wanted to go to New York just to shop. And that dream was certainly fulfilled!
With the current Australian dollar going strong against the American dollar on the exchange rate, shopping in New York or anywhere in the US for that matter, is every shopaholic’s (whether you’re a girl or guy) paradise.
You can start your shopping spree in the midst of SoHo which in fact is an abbreviation for South of Houston Street – quite creative – at least you know you can’t get lost when you’re in New York. Here, you’ll pass some familiar international brands like American Apparel, Ben Sherman and if you keep your eyes open you’ll even spot Ksubi. Much of the boutique stores are top-end fashion so if you’re expecting to find a bargain you’re looking at the wrong place. But it’s still a nice neighbourhood to go for a stroll and go window shopping.
It is also the perfect spot to re-energise at one of the many hip and funky cafes hiding along the quiet streets of SoHo before you hit the shops again. In comparison to Sydney, it is relatively similarly to Paddington’s Oxford Street. It’s just got that sort of vibe.
The shopping adventure will take you up along Broadway where there are the larger American chain brand stores, which is more affordable to the everyday person until you manoeuvre your way towards the glamorous Fifth Ave. This street and its neighbour, Madison Ave, which runs parallel along it, are the heart of New York shopping. These streets are home to brands like Gucci, Prada and Chanel. One store that you must drop by is the historical building of Tiffany & Co. where the classic film of Breakfast at Tiffany’s was filmed – probably more worthwhile for girls rather than guys but it should still be on the ‘must see’ list.
Just one warning before you begin to venture onto your shopping tour of the city that many stores don’t open until 10A.M. or there’s some around SoHo that don’t open until midday. But that also means that the shops stay open later...
I am quite sure, if shop like how I did, you’d be one happy shopper but also a very tired one - a foot massage perhaps? Yes please!
...Stay tuned as in the next few weeks I've got a lot to tell about my recent trip to Vietnam and Singapore!
