The Brooklyn Bridge built in 1883, was the world’s first steel suspension bridge. During that period, it was considered to have the longest span supported of 1,596 feet by two towers. Despite the fact that time has passed and designs of bridges have accompanied to the changes, the Brooklyn Bridge is still considered to be one the world’s most beautiful bridges ever built.
Beginning the walk over the Brooklyn Bridge via the pedestrian entrance you’ll notice yourself walking not on a cement layered footpath but rather wooden planks that have been laid down above the New York traffic below. Centred in the middle, the pedestrian walkway allows you to witness the crazy traffic that runs between the west and east river. You’ll also be able to sniff in some of that aromatic fume escaping from the exhaust pipes of cars and trucks Occasionally, the sound of a beeping horn goes off when traffic comes to a halt before fading away once the cars start moving again after the passing of peak hour.
The Bridge may be a few centuries old but it still stands looking almost untarnished. Along either side of the handrails that keep you falling from the footpath and into the traffic, there are street lamps erected to guide those who enjoy an evening stroll across the bridge. Being more observant, you’ll notice the steel rods holding the bridge together run towards the top point of the stone layered towers like cobwebs that have been spun by a giant spider or Spiderman perhaps. It is almost as if the Bridge was built asymmetrical.
As obvious as the name of the Bridge is, the Brooklyn Bridge does take you across to the east river and over to Brooklyn, the edgier version of New York’s Manhattan. On this side of the river, it is where the more ‘everyday’ New Yorker lives. It is also on this side you will find the suburban neighbourhoods of Queens and The Bronx (though it is advisable for tourists to stay out of the Bronx unless you know where you are going – just in case).
