In the next few weeks, I will be guiding you through the one and only New York City in a series of parts because it is just an absolutely awesome place that needs plenty of attention! Hopefully you enjoy reading it as much as I do writing about it! Cheers! xoxo
From 10 blocks down, like a bug attracted to the site of a glowing light globe, you’ll be walking towards the beaming centre of Time Square, the midtown of Manhattan, New York City. There is an instant feeling of surrealism that will run through your body like an electric shock when you realise you’re standing in the midst of the most popular city in the United States. Seeing the large electronic billboards, massive television screens, flashing neon lights of vibrant colours and hearing the constant beeping horns of the traditional NYC yellow taxis will be like watching every movie that has been based in Manhattan come to life. And just imagine, standing in the crowd on New Year’s Eve waiting in anticipation to watch the illuminated Waterford Crystal Ball drop at midnight – it’d be absolutely crazy when the crowd goes absolutely wild in celebration.
Standing at Time Square you may even spot out New York’s Naked Cowboy (the guy who walks along the streets playing the guitar in his undies). You should say hi to the man and who knows he may end up serenading you with a Bob Dylan song perhaps!
As you keep you walking (N.B: it’s the easiest way to get around the city though on the maps it may look like a distance but it really isn’t), keep to your left and you’ll end up in the Theatre District along Broadway. There are dozens of Broadway shows that are on every night, the only problem you have is which show do you want to see? If you’re lucky, you may even see some familiar Hollywood faces starring as part of a cast. It also often mistaken that tickets to Broadway shows is expensive but if you buy last minute ones from the TKTS Booth up the road, it’d be half the original price.
On the other side of Time Square, is Rockefeller Plaza, featured every morning on America’s TODAY morning news show. But at night, during Christmas time, the place is lit up with fairy lights covering every inch of the tree branch and a statue of Prometheus that looks over the plaza. There is a sense of calamity that runs through the place. The only thing that you can hear is the sliding of people’s skates on the ice-rink located at the Plaza. Ice-skating in Rockefeller Plaza is one of the must-dos when you come to New York as it will be an unforgettable memory.
Around the corner from this will be the familiar neon blue light that read ‘Radio City Music Hall,’ that you often see in the credits of The David Letterman Show. As you make your way through the city, there will be more and more familiar buildings and sites that you will recognise from watching movies. Told you everything you watch will come to life!
