Gone are the days of the text message; yes, sad but true. Today the most common form of communication is via cyberspace connectivity. You name it and we are both probably on it; MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, MSN Messenger, or one of the other variations that claim to keep people in touch.
Upon initial acquirement of my Facebook account [sign up due to the persuasive nature of a childhood friend], I was bewildered by the notion of maintaining contact with old friends, new friends, ex-friends, and friends of friends. Yet, much to my dismay it appears that Facebook "friends" are simply a fallacy.
On a recent mini-break to my hometown, I thought it appropriate to put Facebook to use and contacted comrades with whom I might share an afternoon lunch or evening drink. There had been much messaging back and forth about how great it would be to laugh over coffee, or grab a bite to eat, alongside scheduling occasions of availability. However, at crunch time it became apparent that none of these people desired to catch up in person. I had been cheated by this counterfeit contrivance! It was then that I realized messages, comments and "friends" on devices like Facebook are in fact fictitious most of the time.
So before you solicit someone for a frolic through Facebook, I recommend reconsidering that course of action. Now, excuse my absence for a mere moment, MSN just notified me that a friend has commented on my wall.
Just for fun.
