What do you get when you throw an ex-model, a self taught businesswoman and a need for new clothes into the mixing pot? Well, if you’re Gill Milligan, you’ll wind up with Aussie label Milk and Honey.

Milligan came up with the idea for Milk and Honey in 2003, upon discovering that she simply ‘had nothing to wear.’ It was launched a year later, and was showcased at 2005 Mercedes Australian Fashion Week as part of the New Generation Show (alongside labels such as Julianne and JIMMY D.) Since then, Milligan hasn’t looked back.

The ex-professional model is a self-taught businesswoman and designer. Her career in design began in 1999, when a loan from her grandfather assisted her in starting label Mermaid Sister. Milk and Honey is her second label, and has come a long way since its launch in 2004. It is now stocked extensively around Australia as well as in Malaysia, New Zealand and the UK. Fans of the label fans include fashionistas Sophie Monk and Nicole Richie.

The Future’s so Bright, Milk and Honey’s 2008 autumn/winter range, was inspired by sci-fi movies such as The Fifth Element, and saw the combination of futuristic prints with fashionable detailing come into play. The 1st Summer 2008 collection evokes thoughts of sunny days and childish innocence, as well as showcasing the label’s quirky side; think girly bubble-hemmed skirts, satiny slim fit pants and royal blue cuff shorts.

For all the aspiring fashion designers out there, Milligan is keen to share her own words of wisdom: “Never believe you have nothing left to learn and don't be afraid to be persistent…the feeling of seeing any woman look fantastic in something you have created is amazing.” No doubt self-belief and persistence has, indeed, paid off for Milligan.
