For the historians among us, the 1940s were one of the most defining decades of our time. That’s right; couturier Christian Dior introduced the ‘New Look’ – tight, clinched waists, rounded shoulders and skirts as full as cream puffs! While Dior was making waves across the US and Europe with his sexy silhouette, a young couple, Maurie and Eve were making waves of their own off Bronte beach; a love story that would prove to last, like Dior, beyond their lifetime.

Inspired by her grandparents’ life together, Kelly Green established her clothing label Maurie and Eve. Initially working by herself and creating pieces for family and friends, Kelly then teamed up with her brother Scott and his girlfriend Maya Clemensen. Together they launched Maurie and Eve Platinum, a brand boasting a classic feminine aesthetic with a very sexy edge.

You started this label because…
We always struggle finding clothes we want to wear, so what better way than to make them ourselves!

Has it been a challenging journey?
At times…. Starting your own business is no walk in the park. We’ve gone through the highest highs and lowest lows and now we’re enjoying the journey!

What does the future hold for the label?
We’ve recently began distributing internationally to the US, Japan and Europe. We hope to build solid relationships with buyers and customers abroad as well as continuing to grow in Australia.

The inspiration for the latest collection was…
All things dramatic and over the top; more is more…. None of this less is more!

Trends for Autumn/Winter ’09…
Chunky Knits, lots of fringing, raw distressed fabrics and a darker gothic vibe…

When you’re not working, you’re…
We work 7 days a week, but in the gaps we hang out by the pool or beach drinking cocktails with friends and we try to travel as much as we can!

Favourite Sydney destination…
Bilgola beach is our favorite place to be in summer and the Newport Arms is great for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Anywhere from Newport to Palm Beach is where you’ll find us!

If you could work with any designer, who would it be?
Alexander Wang…. His style is so us… And who wouldn’t want Erin Wasson styling your show!

What advice would you give to designers just starting out?
Know your market… find out who it is your designing for and target it. Research and it’s better to do a few things really well, than a thousand things [that are rubbish]!

How did it feel being a winner at the 2Threads fashion awards?
We were very excited! It’s great to be recognized for all the hard work we do. We really appreciated the public support!

What has been the outcome following the 2Threads fashion awards for you?
A lot of our stores have been contacting us and congratulating us on the win. Hopefully this will lead to bigger sales in 09! Hahahaha! And we’ve had a lot of press inquiries too which has been great!
