Luxe Accessories guests were treated to a pre-show entertainment DJ set, while snacking on finger food and sipping on Skky Vodka, Redback Cristal and Perrier water. Bags of fresh buttered popcorn served from an old-style popcorn maker gave the evening a fun, retro vibe. This playful theme was carried over to the show itself, which opened with a catwalk-cum-burlesque show set to a remix of Shirley Bassey’s â€"Hey, Big Spender.†The opening model was dressed in a silky polka dot dress worn with leather driving gloves, thigh-high fishnet stockings and red mary-jane heels. Taking cues from the 20s, 40s and 70s, the collection was diverse yet coherent, celebrating an eclectic look.
The first part of the show worked within a metallic palette, combining chiffon, silk and sequins for a glamorous look. Worn with faux turbans and suede high heels, this look referenced 20s chic with a modern twist.
Gradually, a more casual, bohemian vibe was introduced, showcasing babydoll dresses, cowboy boots, butterfly motifs and crocheted lace. A standout item was the leather, over-the-knee cavalier boots worn with micro-minis, for a hippie-inspired look that was equal parts sexy and casual.
Use of Lycra signalled the fact that body-hugging fabrics will be huge this season, a welcome antidote to the shapeless silhouette that dominated last year’s fashion. Luxe Accessories used black Lycra offset with bright primary colours such as magenta and buttercup yellow for a bold, modern look.
Tying the show together was the use of leather: from plaited leather belts to elbow length gloves, faux turbans to hooded leather jackets, dainty heels to thigh-high boots, to bags of every shape and size, leather was ubiquitous. With leather promising to be the hottest fabric this season, the style-savvy will undoubtedly be picking up a few choice pieces.
