Last week CarriageWorks in Sydney was host to the Ksubi and Kirin Big in Japan event. Big in Japan was a digital and  experimental showcase of selected contemporary Japanese artists, curated by cult Australian label Ksubi. Performers on the night were flown to Sydney specifically for the event, which brought in a stylish crowd of kids from around Sydney and beyond to witness the obscure and sometimes eerie performances of the Japanese artists.

Performers on the night included sound designer, Daito Manabe, Japanese DJ/MC Mademoiselle Yulia and the unusual trio of performance artists, Kathy. Queen of the Toyko underground scene, Mademoiselle Yulia, who is also well know for her work in Japanese fashion press such as the popular Fruits and Nylon Japan, spun her magic on the decksat the beginning of the night.

Kathy are a Tokyo based performance group who wore identical blonde wigs with black panty hosed faces. Their work aims to comment on the idea of anonymity mixing ritualistic and eerie performances. Another hit on the night was from performance group Trippple Nippples, who pumped up the crowd with their loud, humorous electronic beats and undying energy.

The crowd was, as expected, a mixture of Sydney celebrities and stylistas, all keen to witness the unique performances on the night, and of course to hit up the Kirin beer that was overflowing. CarriageWorks was the perfect venue to hold such a contemporary display of performance art and fashion blended into one memorable experience.
