Jack Kerouac Inspires Amy Kaehnes latest Collection with Silk Tulle Dress and Cape
New Zealand-born Amy Kaehne is set to take Australia’s up-and-coming designers by storm with her easy and tranquil Spring/Summer 09/10 collection. Inspired by Jack Kerouac and Beat culture, Kaehne dedicates the season’s range to “the individuals who comply to social non-compliance in the age of conformity”. While this is only her third season as an independent designer, Kaehne’s distinct design aesthetic flows through each collection, along with her dark sources of inspiration, including Tim Burton’s films, Jack Kerouac’s literature, and “beauty in darkness”.
Despite its reference, there is nothing beatnik about Kaehne’s feminine silk tulle dress, a standout in her neutral-toned range. Apart from the perfectly avant-garde kimono-esque cape, the entire collection could have been taken from a well-dressed 20-something Melbournian: casual, neat and feminine. Although it is rare to find an Australian label without any references to the beach, Kaehne has hit the spot and is already stocked in boutiques as prominent as Corner Shop and The Grand Social.
