Harem Pants

Not many people may know what harem pants are but when I say “drop-crotch pants” you get the idea. I think the latter name is hilarious.

Drop crotch pants (kidding, that was the last time) are all over the runway in New York and Paris. Think more of a tailored trouser than comfortable “happy pants”. You may remember 80’s rap prodigy MC Hammer bumping and grinding in a colourful, parachute style. Note to self – it is not hammer time.

High fashion is doing tailored harem pants that are sexy and fresh. You will find them eloquently named jodhpurs which I think has a much more appealing vibe.

Team high end harem pants with ankle boots or sky high stilettos and you have created the newest look to hit the catwalk. Balenciaga, Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney have brought out gorgeous renditions.

If you want to keep it casual, wear harem pants in soft, flowing materials complete with elastic waists. Ballet flats and a belt will work as will an excessively casual singlet and thongs.

These pants aren’t going to do anything for your figure so be brave and try to pick a style to suit your derriere. I know this seems impossible but the well cut pair pictured below by Phillip Lim has saved the day. Hip slung, fitted to the calf and capri length – these are the harem pants for the not so brave.

There is a crazy amount of different styles and fabrics floating around town, especially op shops. In fact, my friend found a sheer pink, polka dot pair the other day. Luscious.
