HAIR TRENDS 2009
2009 HAIR TRENDS
The pob, the bob and the pixie were the celebrity choices for 2008, everyone from Agy to Katie Holmes was seen sporting the short cuts. For most of us though, hair is somethin’ not to be messed with. While we admired these brave girls we weren’t in a hurry to part with our long tresses. Not surprisingly then; long, textured, voluminous hair is what it is about in 2009.
Long and voluminous
It’s the illegitimate love child of a gypsy and a 1940’s starlet, Veronica Lake perhaps. Done well, this look is timeless; from cult 1960s Spanish actress Soledad Miranda to the runway girls from New York Fashion Week.

Long and straight
Some people are ridiculously lucky and have no need for the ghd ceramic hair straightening iron. Their hair has not heard of static. For us mere mortals, it requires a bit of effort but results in a polished look. Keep the ends soft for a more natural appearance, some people are prone to looking like they have two A4 pieces of paper stuck to the sides of their head.

Braids
During Melbourne Spring Fashion week braids cropped up in a few fashion shows. The trick to this one I think is making it your ‘own’ rather than taking cues from Sienna circa 2007 and Danish milkmaids in cheesy postcards.

Fringe
Celebrities such as Mischa Barton, Reese Witherspoon and Rachel Bilson all love the fringe benefits. They’ve all sported thick, blunt cut fringes at some point. Hailed as an anti-botox miracle worker, bangs are something to bang on about. My favourite is the Lou Doillon. She makes it look like she’s not even trying- the truth is fringes take a bit of work to keep nice.

A few of my tricks for hair boosting
- To tame wavy hair fly-aways I swear by Schwarzkopf anti-frizz serum. Gives hair a good shine too.
- Bicarb soda left applied to hair for 2 minutes after conditioning does wonders for shine.
- Choose sodium lauryl sulphate free shampoo, that stuff is used as an engine degreaser and industrial floor cleaner! It cleans by stripping so it’s bad for skin and can cause hair loss.
- When I lived in Siberia, we washed our hair with thistles left in boiling hot water. Once it cools it’s a nutrient rich hair wash. The more natural, the better. Don't mess with the hair!
