Gossip Girl's bringing preppy back

Gossip Girl is bringing preppy back.

The cast of young hotties on this generation's 90210/Sex and the City hybrid have tacked on to a long line of TV shows and the celebs on them that have been inspiring styles for decades--from Miami Vice with those crazy pimp white suits and colorful rolled-up-to-the-elbow shirts to FRIENDS and the Rachel haircut that swept across ladies' heads from East to West.

Gossip Girl reaches a range of viewers from teeny boppers (with pride) to baby boomers (with guilty pleasure) and everyone in between ... and so do the fashions. And keeping up pace are the chain stores, who this year have jumped on board the preppy train with prominent displays of vests, blazers, layered looks, knee-high socks, argyle patterns and more for the fall.

Men's wear at Macy's features layered vests or cardigans on solid or patterned collared shirts from Marc Ecko and Ben Sherman. Subtle plaids and stripes add a hint of personality and bowties tie in some classic charm (a la Chuck Bass [a.k.a. Ed Westwick]) from Sean John and I-N-C International Concepts. Tommy Hilfiger for men is all argyled up for the fall with sweater vests layered over solid shirts and jeans. Walmart, Kmart, Sears and Kohl's feature slacks for guys' other halves, as well as tailored jeans, such as Levi's anchored by images of Leni Kravitz at Kohl's, that can be dressed up with a blazer or vest (a la Nate Archibald [a.k.a. Chace Crawford] and Dan Humphrey [a.k.a. Penn Badgely]).

Styles for women follow suit with argyle vests and sweaters from TH. I-N-C International Concepts showcases low-cut, button down, zip up or pull over vests for the ladies, paired over collared and ruffled shirts in fun patterns, like paisley. Kohl's prominently sported tailored vests in women's wear in the summer, in preparation for fall.

Peacoats, sweater dresses and knit capelets are also in. As are mini-skirts (a la Serena van der Woodsen [a.k.a. Blake Lively]), which are making a comeback as they are being paired more and more with knee-high socks (a la Jenny Humphrey [a.k.a. Taylor Momsen] and Blair Waldorf [a.k.a. Leighton Meester]). Cashing in on the trend this fall is HUE, which is pairing up with Tibi designer Amy Smilovic for a line of hosiery that will include herringbone tights, chunky sweater-knit leggings, cable stirrup leg warmers and over-the-knee socks, starting in price at $22. The different styles will be sold on Hue.com and at Tibi retail stores, Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's.

So, Gossip Girl follows in the great tradition of TV shows that not only have captivated our attention, but also our closets. And while I'm certainly thankful that the style is at least WAY more acceptable than Miami Vice, remember that trends come and go, but our obsession with them (and maybe with Gossip Girl) is forever ...
