Foodie's Guide To New York.

It’s a fact, you have to eat. And as a tourist, exploring a new city, wandering unfamiliar streets you’re bound to get hungry especially when you’re in a city like New York.

This place is a must for foodies particularly with the diverse cultures the city has to offer and food seems to be the common language between all of them.

The much love original New York pizza slice cannot be missed with the basic varieties of pepperoni or cheese pizza as choices. The sizes of these pizzas are humungous, almost three-times the size of your regular pizza slice from Pizza Hut and so large that half of it will flop over your plate when served. And it goes down best with a large soda. You can grab a slice at Famous Joe’s Pizza located in the neighbourhood of Greenwich Village where the base of the pizza is just perfectly cooked.

Another great tradition when in New York is to have a hotdog from the hotdog stands that hang along side of the footpath. This is best eaten after a Nick’s basketball game at Madison Square Garden (which should be added to your to-do-list!). And if you’re still peckish, grab a kebab platter served with your choice of lamb or beef, rice and salad drizzled over with hot sauce and yoghurt, all for a very cheap price of five bucks!

The line “no soup for you!’ was also made famous in this city by the hit TV show Seinfield. You can visit the soup Nazi at his headquarters at The Original SoupMan which has various locations throughout New York. Though, it was made out to have the ‘best’ soup on the show, it didn’t necessarily pair up to my expectations but it’s always amusing to visit places that were on TV. This is also very much like Tom’s Restaurant, the location where where Jerry, Elaine, Kramer and George from the series would bicker over coffee.

From cheap food-on-the-go, New York also caters for those with upper-class culinary tastebuds. $120 for a burger. Need I say more? But this isn’t any ordinary burger. It’s a burger with truffles and foie gras – how more decadent can a meal get? The pungent aroma of the truffles in the burger is addictive as is the taste when you take-in the monstrous sirloin beef patty into your mouth and feel the truffle and foi gras just simply melt in your mouth. The only place to get this is at DB Bistro Moderne but this burger only comes around during truffle season of December to March. But for the rest of the year, they do still offer the original DB burger which has everything on a smaller scale.

Last but not least, there is always room for dessert. Indulge yourself with one of the scrumptious cupcakes all individually slathered with icing from The Magnolia Bakery in Greenwich Village, also perfect for afternoon tea. And for those devout chocolate lovers, visit Serendipity 3, which makes the exceptionally strange combination of frozen hot chocolate their signature dish.
