Not only did they introduce us to the wonders of waxing, but without a doubt there is nothing more flattering for one’s bootylicious behind then a Brazilian cut bikini. For those of us not fortunate enough to schedule a trip to some exotic oasis offshore, Australian designer Nicky Rowsell brings a sizzling overseas summer to us with her sexy swimwear label Flamingo Sands.

What is the inspiration behind this label?

The Flamingo Sands aesthetic has evolved over the years and is inspired on a daily basis by music, art, pop culture, travel, magazines, vintage fabrics ... Our designs take a lot of cues from what Jane and I like to wear ourselves and what we are into at the time.

How did the label initially come about?

A trip to Brazil inspired the beginnings of Flamingo Sands initially. What I picked up from my trip to Brazil is that it's all about attitude. Not every woman in Brazil is fortunate enough to look like Giselle, but they definitely love the beach lifestyle and love wearing the skimpiest bikinis possible no matter what their body shape - and they look great!

At the time (2003) there weren’t really any fashion based swim labels around that appealed to me. I wanted to create a high-end fashion swimwear label that was both sexy and on trend, that had a great point of difference with the styling and fabrics used.

Has it been a challenging journey?

The fashion/retail industry is very fickle and so most days provide a new challenge. It’s still fun though!

What does the future hold for the label?

Flamingo Sands is still a growing business for us, having been around now since 2004 ... so it's really exciting to see the increased growth each season with our business and count our blessings that we're still around in this crazy industry. We see some great opportunities for us next year in UK/Europe as this market loves to co-ordinate their whole beach (resort) wardrobe with the matching cover up more than us Aussies tend to do – so it’s a perfect market for the Flamingo Sands story.

What inspired the latest collection?

The Flamingo Sands collection captures long hot balmy summer days, having fun with your friends during that summer that never seems to end. It's all about being playful, feeling sexy, glamorous, fun, exotic tropical holiday destinations, meeting hot boys, drinking cocktails, listening to good tunes...

When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?

Watching movies at home, catching up with friends, playing the drums, seeing live bands/listening to music, getting some sort of exercise outdoors, going to the beach/pools in summer…

How would your friends describe you?

As a bit of a softie and reliable, determined to my own detriment… and if they were to lose me in a nightclub – they can always find me on the dance floor…
