Fashion With a Conscience
While rummaging through the racks of Salvos Stores you’re usually more aware of the good you are doing for your bank account than for the environment, but last Wednesday’s launch of “Fashion With a Conscience” put eco-friendly fashion at the forefront of all guests’ minds.
The Salvation Army Salvos Stores launched the new campaign at the Darlinghurst Salvos Store, a space which is usually jammed packed with pre-loved goodness, but for the event had undergone a major re-vamp and was transformed into art installation which showcased exactly what can be done with some of the treasures you find in Salvos Stores and just a little imagination and creativity.

The installation was the hard work of the “designers of the future” –students from The Whitehouse Institute of Design as well as some exclusive creations from one of Australia’s greatest fashion design talents, Kirrily Johnston. As proof that fashion can have a conscience Kirrily Johnston created four unique pieces for the campaign with materials sourced from Salvos Stores.
Amongst the crowd was designer Peter Morrissey, a huge supporter of the campaign, along with Kirrily Johnston, Guy Sebastian and some of Sydney’s pretties including the nine still standing Make Me a Supermodel Contestants. The event was a huge success with guests in awe of what the students and Kirrily Johnston had been able to create, and without slapping an absurd price tag on it.

Shopping in Salvo Stores has become a bit of a cult fashion fixation of late so I’m probably preaching to the converted, but the benefits are pretty damn obvious; save money, recycle and re-use materials, help out those in need and walk down the street looking just a little different from the person who was rifling through the Salvo Store one suburb away. Too easy.
