Fashion Trend for 2009: Back to Nature
One of the latest fashion trends for 2009 is about going back to nature. This doesn’t mean that clothes have been banned from the world because of the economic downfall, nor does it mean that we have been reduced to cave man like qualities with our wardrobes. This new trend is far from primitive, it’s about embracing prints and styles that reflect all things natural. Earthy tones have made a huge come back, as have softer prints and fabrics. Simple adjustments like how a garment falls around the body, as seen in recent collections by fashion designers Gucci and Tony Cohen is reducing fashion back to basic simplicity. These qualities are creating a new trend that represents a more natural approach to fashion, whilst also reminding us of basic elements like water, air and earth.

Besides a clear turn towards simplicity and basic block colour prints, there is also an abundance of floral and jungle-inspired prints gracing long maxi dresses and adorning jewelry. Feathers and all things animal related have also been sneakily and sometimes very obviously worked into garments. Alexander McQueen took nature to the extreme with his dizzying and beautiful garments. They remind me a lot of the intricate and electrifying patterns on the wings of moths and butterflies. McQueen explained himself that Darwinism heavily influenced this collection- it is clear that at the very least McQueen’s approach to fashion and style has gone through it’s own evolution judging by the vast differences of this delicate softer collection to his past designs.

If you want to embrace this new environmentally friendly trend, think of choosing fabrics with distinct natural prints- anything from jungle to ocean, or earth inspired tones. Feathers are a perfect delicate touch to an outfit consisting of hard block tones. Without going overboard, you can go back to nature with a few adjustments to your accessories-think an oversized cuff adorned in coloured stones, or a pair of feather earrings. Going back to nature is about feeling comfort with what we are wearing, and what better way to do that with the ocean and earth inspired prints of late.
