Lipstick, rather tint on the lips, can be stemmed back as far as ancient Egyptians.  Cleopatra wore tints made from flowers and henna in 60 BC.  Since then, the lipstick trend has gone from fashionable to sinful and back a few times.  In the 1800's, wearing lipstick meant you were a witch, in the roaring 1920's, lipstick was a symbol of power.  The most popular color through out the ages has been red. 

I'm a fan of red, but mostly in the warmer weather because it's vibrant and sultry. I've recently been turned on to burgundy, a tint that I feel is perfect for fall and winter.  It's bold, sexy, and easy to pull off no matter what complexion you are.  Burgundy is a lipstick color you must not have chapped lips when wearing because cracks and peels will be obvious--in a horrible way.  I would also recommend wearing burgundy only at night, it's a little too much for daytime wear. The best advice I could give is it to purchase a lip liner a slight shade darker so you don't end up with bleeding burgundy.

This hue is perfect for all skin tones from fair to caramel to chocolate.  The only trick is to make sure the undertone is more fire engine red if you're lighter and more purple if you're darker.  I'm a bigger fan of flat rather than shine but burgundy looks great either way.

In order to avoid looking vampy, the best way to wear this lipstick trend is to play down your eyes.  Charlize Theron looks elegant and alluring because she has natural eye makeup: sutble and mature.  Kiera Knightly looks great but a little tart-like because her eyes are too exaggerated. Her dark hair and thick brows play up this lip color just enough, but with the thick, dark liner she's puts it over the top.
