Fashion DIY: How To Make Shorts From Your Old Denim

This is one of the simplest fashion DIYs you will ever attempt. You need only four things: A pair of scissors, some old jeans and a needle and thread. If you don’t have any jeans you’re willing to sacrifice, don’t panic; just hop down to your local charity shop and pick up a pair for under a fiver. The higher the waist, the better. ‘Too easy, mate’, as a certain jerk I know would say. Today, dear readers, we’re going to learn how to make shorts from your old denim.

First thing’s first; pull on your pair of jeans and figure out how much bum cheek you want to show. Five centimetres from the crotch is a good start. Mark the cut off point using fabric chalk/a pen/a pin/a used Band-Aid. Remove jeans and lay them down on the table. Don’t have a table? The floor, your bed or any flat surface will do. Using your scissors, cut your denim on a slight upward angle towards the crotch. The highest point should line up with your marking. Fold the up the outer edge of the denim by about a centimetre, so the hem now appears straight, and secure with a couple of stitches.

The fraying will come in no time with the help of lots of wear and a washing machine but if you’re impatient like us, you can use a cheese grater or sandpaper to wear away the hem, back pockets and thigh area. Or just roll around in the dirt a bit, harnessing any rocks that might come your way. Once you have the desired look, use some fray stop if you like (you can find it at Spotlight and Lincraft) and avoid the washing machine like the plague, lest they wear away to the kind of shorts even Daisy Duke would consider obscene. Wear with a cropped t-shirt and combat boots and voila! Too cool, mate.

*We take no responsibility for any injuries that might be incurred via pin pricks or sharp rocks.
