The Basement has always been a standout Sydney music venue and even more so in the winter months. The decline from the street into this friendly and cosy establishment, gives one warmth on a cold June night.
Monday Night Live has been a great success, with many patrons fronting up to multiple gigs. Headlining this week were the boys from Faker, with a committed and energetic set that leaves no doubt as to why their fan base and popularity continues to soar.
These boys have a great Aussie-music sound with a hint of Brit-pop infused in their pieces and performances. Lead singer, Nathan Hudson is known for his big on-stage antics but The Basement’s intimate setting did nothing to lessen his electric presence on stage. His voice is gutsy but with a good range and best of all you can actually understand the lyrics when he sings â€" a testament to his vocal talents and the audio benefits of the venue.
The audience was a mix of ages and styles, which again supports the band’s far-reaching popularity. Patrons were impressed to hear songs off the latest album, ‘ Be The Twilight’ as well as their first album. Heads popped in time with the tunes and some devoted fans in the front row sang along to every word.
The set ended with their hugely successful, ‘This Heart Attack’, a catchy and fun number. The performance was intimate (as only The Basement can) and a high calibre performance. Faker are musicians that get engrossed in their performance and music but not at the audiences expense â€" they had a good rapport with the crowd and seemed genuine in their performance and style. Like they say, you can’t fake talent…
