Erin Wasson may be a pretty face, but it’s clear that there is more to her than her stunning features. Although the supermodel is mostly famous for strutting down the catwalk, she’s also been the stylist for Alexander Wang’s fashion shows and has started her own jewellery line, Luv Low by Erin Wasson. All this, at the ripe old age of 26.
Wasson’s career began in 1999, when she won the Kim Dawson model search. A year later, she was hitting the Milan and Paris runways for labels such as Balenciaga and Givenchy. Not bad for a then-18 year old from Irving, Texas.
Since then, Wasson has appeared on the cover of Allure, British Harper’s Bazaar and the elusive French Vogue, to name a few. She has appeared in campaigns for Dolce and Gabbana, Giorgio Armani and Michael Kors and has been the face of Tiffany and Co., Donna Karan and Karl Lagerfeld’s line for H&M. She also signed with Maybelline in 2002, a contract she still holds today.
Perhaps her most interesting collaboration has been with designer Alexander Wang. After discovering they lived in the same East Village apartment in 2006, Wasson and Wang became firm friends, with Wang asking the model to style his first ever runway show in New York. Wang’s spring 2008 fashion show, which drew inspiration from the film Working Girl, saw Wasson act both as stylist and catwalk model.
Not content with being just a pretty face, Wasson has also ventured into the realm of jewellery designing. Low Luv by Erin Wasson is a collection of grungy looking jewellery (think super long chains and suspender-like decoration) and was featured in Wang’s 2008 Fall Collection. Although you don’t have to be a supermodel to wear them, you may need a supermodel income to afford it, as pieces start at around $1200.
Even though being a supermodel clearly has its perks, designing is clearly Wasson’s outlet for creative expression. “I have too much going on in my brain to just be a face, an image, without a voice behind it," says Wasson. With sentiments such as these, it’s clear that Wasson will soon be known for more than her good looks.
