Cubeecraft craze hits Australia with Vodafone Christmas Clones
2threads is proud to be partnering with Vodafone this Christmas to bring you news on the Vodafone Cubeecraft craze.
Cubeecraft craze hits Australia with Vodafone Christmas Clones.
Forget complicated video games and high-tech gadgets. Christopher Beaumont’s uber-cool, low-fi Cubeecraft models are taking the world by storm.
The build-them-yourself cuboid characters – or Cubees – can come from anywhere. Classical literature. The latest video games. Barack Obama already has a Cubee. Each character is reformatted into a simple papercraft design that can be downloaded, printed, and then folded into shape without using any glue.
Vodafone interviewed the creator of the web-based papercraft phenomenon to celebrate their collaboration on Vodafone’s latest online campaign, Vodafone Christmas Clones. Click here to view the site.
Vodafone’s campaign lets people choose a specially-commissioned festive Cubeecraft character, add their own face to the design, and then send this ‘Christmas Clone’ to friends. Friends then print and build it, helping the sender to be everywhere they want to be over the Christmas period.
A crafty comeback
With more and more Cubeecraft models popping up in offices and bedrooms around the globe, we asked creator Christopher Beaumont if he thinks that arts and crafts are making a comeback?
“They've definitely always been popular, but like anything they have found a wider audience and better distribution via the web.”
It took Beaumont over a year to fine tune his Cubeecraft model, which he came up with while taking a course in packaging design. He created a site to share designs with his friends, and interest rocketed.
“I get e-mail from all over the world. I have heard of [Cubeecraft models] being sold (illegally) in Thailand and Mexico. Teachers have been using them in their classes, students have been using them for projects.”
Visit Vodafone Christmas Clones to check out the 10 exclusive Cubeecraft designs – from Santa to Surf Babe – and then create your own Christmas Clone so you can be everywhere you want to be this Christmas. Plus every time you send your Clone on to a friend, you’ll be entered into a draw to win $5,000. Click here to visit the site.
