On a chilly Sydney evening last Thursday my guest and I, huddled in our anoraks, descended upon the Watershed at Darling Harbour.

After a slight confusion of where exactly the event was, some very friendly staff and attractive male models (doubling a door bitches) pointed us in the right direction.

I was pleased to see the upper level was packed. Both rooms were full with bar space, tables, chairs and canapés proving hard to come by.

After grabbing a few cosmopolitans, my friend and I finally found a spare quarter of a table, and settled in to enjoy the spectacular view of Sydney Harbour through the wall to floor ceilings.

Soon we managed to track down the staffer selling raffle tickets and eagerly jumped at the chance to purchase 3 for $20. After all, the prizes did include a Gucci and Prada handbag and a Cerrone diamond necklace.

As the event kicked on we wandered over to the chocolate fountain and indulged in some very sticky, gooey, chocolate dipped marshmallows – a bit of a sugar overload with the cosmos in hand!

An announcement sounded from the front of the room; the raffle draw was about to begin. Judith Cawley announces that, after expecting to raise around $3000 dollars, the event has actually raised $11 000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, well done Sydney. Note to event organizers: having Gucci and Prada bags as raffle prizes is a very good way to get people to donate money to your cause!

Raffle ticket number 102 was first drawn, and as everyone looked around the room for the winner my friend jumps up in surprise “Ooh that’s me!” graciously stepping forward to receive her prize; a years subscription to Marie Claire magazine.

Now, if only I can win that Cerrone diamond necklace (“pretty, pretty please” I pray to the high powers of the universe with fingers tightly crossed)…alas, it was not to be. Although I think the lady who did win was in a substantial state of shock herself. I’m sure that for the rest of the week she was dreaming about all the different things she could do with her prize; keep it? Buy a new car? Or a new designer wardrobe?...

Regardless of winning or not, all did go home happy, with heavy goodie bags tucked tightly beneath their arms.
