Burberry is a British label that was founded in 1856. The fact that they have been around for so long goes to show how central the label is to British culture, producing luxury goods such as fragrances, clothes and accessories. Creative director for the label, Christopher bailey could be called nothing short of a genius for keeping the label in a modern context while still retaining its integrity. Studying his masters at the Royal collage of Art in 1994, Bailey was immediately snapped up by Donna Karan. Bailey was designing for the New York label between 1994 and 1996 before becoming senior designer of womenswear at Gucci up until his appointment at Burberry in 2001.

Since becoming creative director of Burberry in 2001, Bailey has become responsible for all of Burberry’s lines and ventures such as Burberry Prorsum and Burberry London. It seems that Burberry could not have asked for a better pairing, with Bailey winning numerous prestigious awards while at the helm of Burberry, including designer of the year at the British fashion awards in 2005. Previous Burberry campaigns under Bailey’s direction included stars such as Lily Donaldson, Kate Moss, Sophie Dahl and the most recent, the Emma Watson Burberry campaign which is quintessentially British and Burberry – tweed, trenches and lots of handbags.

2009 saw Burberry come full circle, with their first ever showing in London for fashion week. A plethora of fashion elite and celebrities celebrated the label’s move from Milan to its hometown, and the collection epitomised British chic that Burberry has always been associated with. The classic trench was revived for a modern shopper while stunning fabrics were paired with draping, proving that Christopher Bailey is of the right calibre to take Burberry right through the next decade if he wished, gracing us with many more beautiful collections to come.
