The Cannes Film Festival is like the older, mature and edgier sister to the Oscars. Maybe it’s the French air that makes anyone who comes there infinitely more stylish than their former selves, but Cannes is a perennial favourite with those who want to see fashion as dramatic, enigmatic, intriguing and captivating as the films that are screening. There were no disappointments this year with a fantastic turnout of stars doing the promotional circuit on the French Riviera; however the top 3 looks should be credited to Natalie Portman (for championing a trend), Rose McGowan (innovative dressing) and Gwyneth Paltrow (for doing an amazing red carpet style comeback!)
Natalie Portman worked the ruffles trend like no other. Three successive ruffled gowns were a bold move but one that paid off. She was an image of theatric pose and elegance in purple, white and black – especially the striking Givenchy gown. Some might say it was too much ruffling action for one week but I say work it! What are your thoughts?

Meanwhile Rose McGowan may not be known for much other than her fling with Marilyn Manson (and how can we forget Charmed) however she gained some fashion cred when she wowed fans with a spectacular Dolce & Gabbana gown that spun heads as well as cleverly disguising her broken foot! Practical and stylish? Oui oui!

Gwyneth Paltrow has been absent of late on the red carpet scene so Cannes was a prime opportunity for her to re-assert her rightful place on the style map. She made an inspiring return, showing off her fabulous new body and haircut, with mini dresses coupled with sky high stilettos.
