On my first listen to She & Him 'Volume One' I was immediately struck by a sense of charm, warmth and a familiarity that was like coming home to a nice home-cooked meal after a long time away.
She & Him is Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward. Of course the knowledge that this is not any Zooey Deschanel but indie actress Zooey Deschanel’s debut album made it more interesting to find out how she fared in the actress-cum-singer stakes which have had many casualties. However She & Him have crafted a great record that harks back to the 50s era and pays homage to its pop and country influences. The intimate feel of the album gives you the sense that this was really a labour of love. A couple of cover versions of songs from the Beatles and Smokey Robinson sit right at home among the original tracks which are a joy to listen to with their smooth clear vocals which is a big credit to the talents of Deschanel.
One standout track “Sentimental Heart” emphasizes the strong storytelling that permeates throughout the whole record. With every song you can picture what is happening and your heart and soul is taken on a journey. A gorgeous pared-back acapella version of ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ ends the journey on a reminiscent note appropriate to the whole feel of the album. Simply perfect for a rainy day with a cup of tea in hand and snuggled under the blankets, She & Him ‘Volume One’ is an instant classic.

| another 'actress-turned-singer' album? usually i'd shy away from such albums, but deschanel has enough cred to warrant a listen |
