The historical days of America still echoes in-between the office buildings of Boston’s modern city. You can take a step back into history and visit the capital city of Massachusetts with a cruisey four hour drive up from New York City.
Learn and visit the historical sites of the city with the not-to-be missed Freedom Trail tours where you can be your very own Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz as you follow the red-brick road. The experience is very much like going to a museum except it’s more exciting because the mystery is wondering where the road would take you next.
The trail also includes making a visit to the city’s old town hall known now as the Faneuil Hall Marketplace. It is the most tourist visited market in the city that sells an array of souvenirs from locally made hot-sauce to t-shirts. It’s a great place to grab a feed as well in their marketplace’s food hall. You may be tempted to have some Japanese at Wagamama but skip it and why not try some local cuisines. As you march your way along the food hall you’ll salivate wanting everything you see but one thing you have to try is Boston’s iconic dish – a clam chowder – always warming to the heart on a cold winter’s day.
By the end of the trail, you’ll not only have a better insight into American history but you’ll have seen a great part of Boston already. This gives you the chance to have time to explore what is sitting on the other side of the city, over the bridge.
On the other side of the Charleston river bank, is the city of Cambridge, the place where the smart kids congregate and where college life comes alive.
Here in Cambridge is home to the world’s most-renowned Law College and that is Harvard University. Originally opened by the man John Harvard, the school has built itself a great reputation of being the ‘it’ place to come if you’ve got the brains to get your through Law school. John Harvard now sits proudly as a brass statue high up in his chair in the Harvard Yard. You can even pay the man a visit and give his foot a little rub – it’s a known myth that if you do, it’s sure to bring you some good luck. The university also offers free walking tours daily around the campus giving you greater insight into the background of place but you are more than welcome to also just wander by yourself.
Down the road of Massachusetts Avenue along where all the alpha, beta, gamma writing is inscribed into the stone walls marking the fraternity and sorority homes, is MIT – Massachusetts Information Technology – the lead university for geeks? And yes, potentially there is a high chance of bumping into that stereotyped “geek” with high pants up to the waist, dorky looking glasses and when you eavesdrop into their conversation it’s about school-related talk. However, don’t undermine these super-smarties as the Kate Bosworth movie 21 showed you how a few of them outsmarted the casinos in Las Vegas, and yes it was based on a true story.
