The first exhibition to be held across both National Gallery Victoria venues, Black In Fashion – Mourning to Night is a fascinating insight into the role the colour Black has played in fashion and life through the ages.
Drawing on garments from mid-nineteenth century to present day, the journey from Mourning Dress to the super sexy Little Black Dress is explored against the backdrop of minimalist lighting and a soundtrack of music by the likes of Nick Cave, Depeche Mode and the Sisters Of Mercy.
The International Collection features the who’s who of the Haute Couture world, Gianni Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and John Paul Gautier to name a few, all putting their personal touches on the ever stylish and always classic black.  
Venture to NGV Australia at Fed Square and you’ll find many fine pieces, including the “Stud Dress” by Jenny Bannister, a dress made entirely of leather pieces, held together by metal studs only, a stunning late 1950’s evening dress by Pat Rogers that would not look out of place on the Hollywood red carpet and a simple yet beautiful dress by the wonderful Mira Vukovic, designer behind the label Mad Cortes.  If you’re after an afternoon of high fashion mixed with the history of mourning customs in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s,  I highly recommend both exhibitions.
