Want to know how to get in on grunge’s latest fashion trend? Think ripped and laddered stockings and leggings. Throughout 2008 ripped stockings made a comeback onto the runways and into our wardrobes and this trend doesn’t seem to be disappearing as we enter into 2009. Like a flashback to the early days of grunge fashion in the 1990's, ripped and laddered stockings are about do-it-yourself self expression adding unique tailoring to any outfit. Socialite model, Alice Dellal, mixes her ripped stockings with biker boots and black and white.

Alexander Wang’s Autumn/ Winter collection of 2008 set the ripped stockings trend back in solid fashion. Mixing his monochromatic garments with heavily ripped stockings ensured a total neo-grunge look. The laddered stocking has yet to be seen gracing the legs of many celebrities- mostly because it’s a challenging addition to any outfit and is not for the play it safe styles of most.

So what is the best way to wear this trend? It’s important when customising your stockings to be relatively fearless- go for more than two little snips of fabric. If you simply cut a few tiny holes it will just look like you have unintentionally ripped the stocking (which happens to the best of us). The aim is to create a new look to the stocking- think repeated horizontal lines or a few larger holes (be careful when creating holes-if they go too big, it can look disastrous!) Don’t just use scissors in your attempt to customise, you can use lots of different kitchen utensils too, like graters!

One of my daily blog stops, fashiontoast, is run by Rumi, an inspiration to those who aspire to the neo-grunge look. Check out her version of the DIY ripped and laddered stockings. When wearing ripped or laddered stockings the key is to make it look like they are intentionally altered! And not like you actually caught your stockings against something sharped and they pulled slightly. Of course this trend works best with a contemporary twist on grunge fashion- mix it with leather and ankle boots and keep the overall ensemble in mostly black and white.

The question remains, will you dare to tear?
